How to Find the Best Flights to Belize

As Belize becomes more popular as a vacation destination, more and more airlines are adding flights to Belize, and offering competitive discounts to try to win your business. There are currently 7 international airlines that fly into Belize: TACA, Continental, American, Delta, US Air, Canada WestJet, and Air Canada.

US flights originate from Miami, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Newark, Charlotte, and Atlanta. TACA is very popular with Belizeans, and also has direct service to other countries in Central America via El Salvador.

The best days to fly into Belize are Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Mondays are popular with business travellers, and weekends are prized by vacationers wanting the longest trips possible, so these days are best avoided if you’re trying to save some cash. The most expensive times to fly to Belize are during peak holiday travel times like Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s.

Budget Options

Sometimes it can be cheaper to fly into Cancun or Cozumel instead of flying directly into Belize, due to tax differences between the two countries, the fact that the Mexican flight industry is larger, as well as the subsidization of the tourist industry by the Mexican government. The 8-hour bus ride from Cancun to Belize City through ADO Bus only costs $45. Another cheaper option is to fly into Flores, Guatemala and take the bus to Belize from there. The cheapest flight you’re going to get from North America directly to Belize is going to set you back about $250, and you’ll need to book pretty far in advance.

Choose Your Flight Research Tool

Once you’ve got your flight dates and itinerary in mind, it’s time to hit the travel sites and crunch some numbers. Google Flights is a good place to start, as are travel comparison sites like Travelocity, Priceline, and Expedia. Kayak and Skyscanner are also worth checking out.

Contact the Airline Directly

When you’ve found the best price available for the dates you are looking for, it’s usually best to just contact the airline directly and purchase the ticket from them. Deals that are offered through fare aggregator sites are rarely cheaper than what you can purchase directly from the airline, and often times, it’s easier dealing with airlines directly if you need to change your reservations, etc.

Don’t Forget to Check Southwest

Since Southwest doesn’t show up on any travel comparison sites, it’s worth checking their website to see if they have any good fares on offer. Southwest now offers direct flights to Belize City from both Houston and Denver.

Getting to Belize from the UK

Most of the flights from the UK to Belize are routed through the US. This has typically meant an overnight stopover in the US, but in the fall of 2016, American Airlines began selling tickets for flights to Belize from the UK that don’t require an overnight stop. AA’s Belize flights leave Heathrow in the afternoon and only stop over in Miami for a few hours on the way to Belize City.

Although Belize is a great vacation destination that’s fairly inexpensive once you get there, it can be a little more expensive flying into Belize than comparable rates to nearby countries. So it pays to be savvy – and to plan in advance! Once you’ve got that taken care of, you can focus on immersing yourself in the relaxed local culture and admiring all of the scenic beauty that Belize has to offer.
